Rodney Stark says in The Victory of Reason: "Slavery ended in medieval Europe only because the church extended its sacraments to all slaves and then managed to impose a ban on the enslavement of Christians."
Dr. Phil Stringer in his voluminous Foundations of Our World describes how this action progressed to ultimately sound like this from Thomas Jefferson:
"We hold these truths to be self evident: that all men are created equal; that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable rights; that among these are life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness."
Less than a century elapsed until all people of the United States were deemed fully human and for the first time in history slavery was swiftly declining around the world due to pressure from America and Europe.
Christendom in spite of its human flaws had done what the Greek, Romans and other cultures had failed to do, abolish slavery. (They never made an attempt). Non-Christians shared in the blessing of this monumental effort of Christ loving people.
The idea that national origin, religious affiliation or color would no longer determine the level of humanness became reality. Praise the Greeks, Romans and others but the never reached the heights of Christendom.
It's true that Islam supposedly bans the enslavement of their own, but they are free to enslave infidels at will.
Truth is all humans are created equal. It's The Christ thing.
