You are the only one who can answer the question for yourself. And I know from experience this is a real toughie. Here’s a little help from an interesting writer/philosopher.
“Care about people's approval and you will be their prisoner.” Laozi.
I do not, and I feel certain that most of my readers do not, subscribe to the overall teaching of Taoism, (pronounced Daoism) but as in most cases there are teachings which touch on a truth now and then. Perhaps you are a prisoner to the ideas or teachings of some other half baked religious guru and were you to disagree you would be blackballed, shunned, or relegated to the margin or literally kicked out. You decide to be quiet about what you do not believe to be true and thus spend sleepless nights and guilt tossed days due to a failure to, as Shakespeare stated:
“This above all: to thine own self be true, And it must follow, as the night the day, Thou canst not then be false to any man.”
Much of the scandal in Evangelical circles over the years has been due to false beliefs about the human (Adamic) nature and the truth concerning this is held back due to a fear of some sort of loss, financially or of face. The truth is that even in Christ we’re are awaiting what Paul calls the glorious unveiling of the Sons of God. If we are honest with ourselves we acknowledge our need for Holy Spirit constraint in our life and further note that we, more than we like to admit, need such verses as,
1John 1:8 “If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.”
Personally, I am thankful that He looked beyond my faults and saw my need. He’ll do the same for you.
