LLLV19 3-28-2019 Bach on Hardest Instrument to Play
While sitting around musing then walking around musing, next staring out the window musing, the email alert sounded. I put away my musing mind and checked. Voila!
A grand quote jumped off the page sent to me by my friend, Dale Byers. It’s incredible what musing can do when your mind is frozen in the empty state.
“The well-known musician Johann Sebastian Bach was asked;
“What is the most difficult instrument to play?” His response was, “Second fiddle.” Dale Byers.
Ah, the second fiddle. The #2 instrument of whatever kind is a fear-inducing thought. I’ve never met a person in any field whose goal is to play second; this exempts 2nd base for the Yankees. Second Base in the orchestra? Oh sure.
It’s admitted that the lessor, 2nd in line adds much to music, ministry, and other endeavors, but we seldom read much about the people in 2nd place.
Recently a man walked in late to a luncheon that many of us locals attend. Someone mentioned the tardiness to which I remarked; “It’s testimony that he is a super nice guy.”
I received the expected blank stares. This is normal when you’re the oldest guy in the room. I was merely quoting a famous Baseball Coach of the World Champion New York Giants, Leo Durocher, who uttered the line, “Nice Guys Finish Last.” when he was asked why he put such effort in being number one. Alvin Dark, who at 17 years of age played Shortstop in the World Series for Mr. Durocher told me; “Larry, Coach, was nicer than that statement made him seem.”
Well, Alvin, an outstanding Christian is gone now, and the above is an aside to the theme of today’s article.
In the work of Jesus Christ on earth, any status in which we can be fruitful in our service for the Lord is a place of honor, and we should give our all where and how He has placed us knowing that Jesus Christ honors for the giving of our best in areas of time, talent and treasure.
