One phrase on growth that I still attempt to practice is the principle of doing better than my best. This is important to remember when you’re playing golf. You’re really not competing against others, but against your former best.
Growth can be negative or positive, depending on what you’re talking about. My emphasis in this brief piece is personal growth in positive areas. While thinking along this line an idea popped into my mind and I immediately set out on a search for a mind grabbing quote. My journey took about 30 seconds. Today’s gem applies to whatever area you are seeking to improve through growth.
“Unless you try to do something beyond what you have already mastered, you will never grow.”
For a while, several years ago, I, along with many others, considered myself to be somebody. So deep was this perception that a preacher come to me and asked for advice concerning his preaching style. He said, “Larry, my preaching is boring!” I said, “I already know that, so what is really troubling you?” He replied, “It’s so blah, that it even bores me!” He read his sermons word for word and found this boring. He did not have a clue as to the finer points of what we called in Elementary School, Declamation. Reading with emphasis, nuances, modulation and passion. Speakers know the truth. If what you are saying, rather from a script or extemporaneously, doesn’t move you, it’s not going to move your hearers. I suggested he try memorizing his material and refusing to speak until he could laugh or cry as the text would demand.
My friend said, “I have never memorized a speech in my entire life.” Common sense should have taught him that unless you attempt beyond your current experience you cannot grow.
Simple, isn’t it?
The Apostle Peter taught this principle in 2Peter 3:18 “but grow in the grace and knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To Him be the glory both now and forever. Amen.” He gave advice as to how in1Peter 2:2 “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby,”
Here’s a thought: What new thing can you start trying today that will enhance your journey toward your dreams?
