When this feeling of being totally drained comes along, there are a number of things, things that cost nothing to help. I read a statement the other day by a man who knew the draining power of high position. Note his statement.
“I readily fled to those oriental regions, plunged into the first books of Moses, and there, amid the scattered shepherd tribes, found myself at once in the greatest solitude and the greatest society.” Goethe.
This German who knew firsthand, about conflict, intrigue, and the roller coaster life of a literary figure, would set his mind to biblical places and personages and mentally time travel to the places, people and culture of earlier biblical times. While there he would imaginatively smell the desert, gaze into the mountains wondering at their magnificent power and beauty. Along the way he would listen to Moses ruminate about life, about how it is better to dwell as a desert nomad with a clear conscience than to dwell in the palace of Pharaoh in disobedience to known truth. Perhaps he would think he heard Moses; “You know, Johann, I am now 80 years along the way. I had hopes for the last 40 years of my life taking a dramatic change, but even though my youth is behind me, I still live in the hope God’s intervention in my life. Realistically I know there’s about as much chance of one these bushes’ talking to me as there is of God doing much in my life at this point. But, you never really know what a day may offer.”
Most people are not aware of the fact that I too, have walked with Moses in the desert! Also with Joshua around the walls of Jericho! Over the years in my mind, during some very tough times, I have been to places and listened to men and a few women, share their faith and courage with me.
The Bible is chock full of real life experiences and when read, with a pause, a pause to “see” the picture and “hear”, along with feel and smell, we can let this exercise renew our hearts and minds, even as we trudge along the chosen path, grasping that in some way, this very day a bush may speak! A Raven may drop off some deeply spiritually energizing morsel, sent from the Lord Himself who knows the journey is too great for me. I may hear again, the voice of Christ saying to me, in the midst of the angry Pharisees, “Son, thy sins be forgiven thee!”
When we learn to personalize the truth of the scripture stories and stated truths, they carry a dynamite power to weld hope to a hopeless situation and loose the mighty power of the Holy Spirit within our own. When all is said and done, the beauty of the Bible Believer is the belief that Jesus Christ personally cares for us and through His Word He speaks, to us! He speaks as often as we will listen.
