I browsed through a sermon by Dr. Tom Wallace on victory in many areas of the Christian Life. I found it amazing that the number two area was victory in using the tongue. The first was the sin of aimlessness.
Dr. Wallace recounted the old story told by C.H. Spurgeon. “As I walked through a grave yard I noticed inscribed on a tombstone:
‘Here lies the body of Arabelle Young,
Who on the first day of May,
Finally began to hold her tongue.’”
Sometime ago I talked with a pastor going through it as the brethren ripped him to pieces. I knew of the vitriol thrown at this man. He and I have been pastors long enough to know that this should not be, but it is so nonetheless. He said, “Larry, in all the time I have been at our church and the hundreds of speakers I have used only one has not run down other preachers or wasted time talking about the latest failure within clergy ranks.”
I enjoyed Dr. Wallace’s lesson on Victory because during to the 50 years I have known him, I have never heard him attack another Christian, evangelist or pastor. Actually I learned from him to attempt to help a troubled brother in quiet ways.
James 1:26 “If any man among you seem to be religious, and bridleth not his tongue, but deceiveth his own heart, this man's religion is vain.”
