I have been thinking about all the hullabaloo surrounding the Washington Redskins and so much blabber about the name being insulting to Native Americans. Being about 50/50 German and Monacan Indian I have had to seriously search my innards as to how I feel about this. After many moons of musing, an answer has finally surfaced from the red and white spirit.
I think the name is repulsive to all thinking people of whatever ethnic group. I talked with whites, blacks, red, yellow, and I think a few polka dots and they by and large agree that yes, the term is offensive and in many cases sickening.
The final solution came to me Thursday evening past when one of the men came to church wearing a sweat shirt in the colors of the Washington Redskins with the new name ironed onto the front. Baptist people are usually staid in response to such things, but our group actually broke into raucous applause, even shouting a “right on man.” The Charismatic type response to a shirt set me to wondering, “Lord, where have I missed it?”
The giant of a man wore not only the colors, but the new non-offensive name emblazoned across his chest. I fight back a tear of joy as I recall the scene, one that will live in my repository of the near sacred.
His sweatshirt in the blood red and maize colors literally shouted out, “REDSKINS.” The word that has offended so many is gone, cast away forever into the misty vapors of time. Now I can cheer for the name of half of me without shame! Go Redskins, and plainly so, without that moniker of infamy.
