“We gathered input from our people, put together a profile of needs based upon this input, and have tried as best we could to anticipate in faith the best composite to expect with God’s next man for our church.”
My friend sent the letter to me in response to my article in the August issue of Larry Lilly’s Journal, Strangely Wrapped Gifts. Click the title to read the article.
It is my humble, though thoroughly biblical based position that God has clearly defined the needs of any congregation and the method of solutions, strength, and motivation are also clearly defined in scripture. A world of information is embedded in 2 Timothy 4:2, “Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.”
As Spurgeon might say, “Me thinks said congregation’s correct action may be to exchange “needs” for “entitlements.” A deep drink from the milk of the sincere Word may also help. I assured my friend of forty years that Jesus spared him much grief.
