An anonymous writer stated the nature of our battle to live the life God has laid out for us with this gem: “The challenge is to be yourself in a world that’s trying to get you to be like everyone else.”

Believe it or not the quote is right in line with biblical truth. Paul graphically talks about this phenomenon in  Romans 12:2, “And be not conformed to this world: but be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind, that ye may prove what is that good, and acceptable, and perfect, will of God.”

Anyone who takes a mere minute or a lifetime of study understands the vast liberating distance between conforming and transforming. Conforming simply means, “to make like: shape to fit: adapt.” Strong’s Concordance confirms conform deals primarily with the outward, while transform with the inner. The only legitimate mold we have for the outer and the inner is Christ. This model pretty much leaves off the outer and gets down to where the rubber meets the road, what/who is going on/in your mind and heart?

If the Holy Spirit is working in harmony with God’s Word, be assured that He is, then the transforming work is correcting our mind to become ever more like the mind of Christ and changing our feelings into the feelings of Christ.

Tragically many live in vain attempts to be like someone, and thus never live their own lives.

"When in Rome, do as the Romans do." And "when in America, do as the Americans do." And when in Sodom, do as the Sodomites do.

And doing what others did, becoming like everyone else, the Israelites ended up in captivity in Babylon for 400 years, where they got a chance to really do like the Babylonians did. And very few were still Israelites to leave the captivity. When you're just like everyone else, you're no better than the rest, and there is nothing special about you, professions of being Christian not withstanding.
