Thankfully I have survived the night. David, unaffected by a human/culture generated “Cloud of Shame,” was possessed of a heart that was after God’s own heart; meaning, “a heart for God.” George Worthy made this comment about David.
“If, after David had fallen, he made excuses, rationalized, or resisted the clear message of his sinfulness, it would have been a totally different story. His heart would have revealed a self-justifying, self-righteous attitude with no realization of his absolute need for God's mercy. This would have defeated and defined him as a man after his own heart. But the immediacy and completeness of David's confession qualified him for the Lord's forgiveness and mercy, saving him from death and restoring him to that most treasured relationship of his life, his relationship with God.”
I am certain George meant “restored fellowship,” we moderns tend to mix up relationship and fellowship.
The observational and scriptural truth reveals some of us have more problems with self than do others and we are definitely more likely to resist cultural pressure than are others of a different make up. But, a heart for God will lead to deep and effective repentance and a forsaking of the improper performance, sin, and seeking restoration from the Lord. That this restoration is possible and freely given is attested throughout both Old and New Testaments. It would be nice to never need to use the restoration verses in the scriptures.
