On a personal level Cicero wrote:
“The man who backbites an absent friend, nay, who does not stand up for him when another blames him, the man who angles for bursts of laughter and for the repute of a wit, who can invent what he never saw, who cannot keep a secret -- that man is black at heart: mark and avoid him.”
Marcus Tullius Cicero
A source of pain in my life has been a number of friends like the ones mentioned above. A source of searing pain is that on occasion I have been that kind of friend. Solomon commented on true friendship in Proverbs 18:24, “A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.”
A friend that sticketh. A stick by you friend is rarer than Shakespeare’s famous Jewel. Be one.
