On October 16, 1555 three Anglican Bishops, Nicholas Ridley, Hugh Latimer and Thomas Cranmer were burned at the stake for attempting to move the Anglican Church toward a more Bible based stance. Queen Mary 1 (Bloody Mary) insisted on a move back to Roman Catholicism. As I understand it, Latimer and Ridley were bound back to back to the same stake and suffered long as the wood was green. One of the most famous and inspirational encouragements in history comes from this black event. Near the end Hugh Latimer gave out this truth:
“Be of good comfort, Mr. Ridley, and play the man! We shall this day light such a candle by God’s grace, in England, as I trust shall never be put out.”
Thankfully modern Christians use more civilized methods to destroy whom we deem less enlightened. Yet the courage of Hugh Latimer still echoes across the centuries and calls men and women to live the life courageous in the name of Jesus Christ. Around the world today, Christians are martyred daily. We, for the most part remain silent to this outrage.
