The Saints of Berean, with yours truly as leader, have been watching Dennis Swanberg’s series, The Man Code. The title of speech number three is "Four Words Every Man Wants to Hear.” We had a few laughs as we tried to figure out what the four words are. The idea’s ranged from “I lost the list,” “I’m sorry, you’re right,” to “My mother was wrong,” to “You’re the greatest husband.” Some others were proffered, but I’ll leave well enough alone.
Dennis' words, “I’ve got your back,” coming from a trusted friend, are words of pure gold. speech was among the top ten thirty minute sermons I have heard in over fifty years. It does hurt to watch a man who is the same age as my oldest child being a very good mentor to younger men and have the humiliation of knowing he is smarter than me. Life has its moments.
In his talk Dennis used the 3 to 1 principle, meaning that every man needs three totally trusted friends to whom he can open up, who will in times of turmoil drive him to number 1, one being Jesus. Hence the 3 to 1 principle.
Not only should we have three such friends, but we should also be such a friend. His closing story brought out the hankies.
Proverbs 18:24, A man that hath friends must shew himself friendly: and there is a friend that sticketh closer than a brother.
